Having 574 acres of incredible parkland and woodland, Hylands Park is one of the best places to walk dogs in Chelmsford. Here you will find ancient woodlands, grassland, lakes, ponds and majestic gardens.

Hylands Park is the perfect place to visit if you want your dog to have a really good exercise. He or she will be able to run around for miles and explore a number of woods which cover nearly a quarter of the estate.

Your dog can roam freely in almost every part of Hylands Park but must remain on a lead close to the grade II listed neoclassical villa and The Stables.

Danbury Country Park features 45 acres of grade II listed park and gardens with lakes, ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. It is the ideal place for walking your dog. 

The large open spaces are perfect for letting your dog run free and throwing a ball for them to fetch. In addition, the footpaths are well-maintained, making it very accessible. 

Walking next to the lakeside path, you’ll travel alongside calm waters where you can see ducks, swans and fish, as well as the beautiful ornamental gardens. You’ll also find plenty of places to sit down while your dog explores, with many benches scattered around the park.

Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation

Address: Wharf Rd, Chelmsford CM2 6YQ

Best features: 14 miles long, great scenery

Facilities: Refreshments available at Paper Mill Lock

The 14 mile walk runs from Springfield Basin in Chelmsford to the sea lock at Heybridge Basin near Maldon. The towpath is simple to follow along the length of the Navigation and it is clear where it switches from one bank to the other.

If you or your dog can’t manage to walk the full 14 miles, there are many links to the towpath that enable you to do round walks of a length of your choice.

During the walk you’ll travel over lots of locks and wander through some outstanding countryside, making this another great place to walk dogs in Chelmsford.
